I had a fantastic 3 day backpacking trip with a couple of friends on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington this August. We backpacked from north to south, starting in Ozette and ending in Rialto. What I loved about this trip was the variety of coastal land….some long sandy beaches, many boulder strewn, many covered in the most colourful seaweed I’d ever seen. Although I imagine that wildlife is abundant there, I spotted only a few otters, a doe and her fawn, gulls, sandpipers, and two heron. I spotted this heron one morning on the second day of our trip.
